Sebastien Lagree is a French American inventor and fitness visionair. He is the CEO and founder of Lagree fitness and has designed a method that is licensed by over five hundred fitness studios worldwide...
Tell us about your childhood.
I grew up in France in the countryside and went to school just outside of Paris. I spent most of my childhood in nature, I spent a lot of time hiking through the forest.
Was your family instilled a love of fitness?
My mom did. I was getting fat around the age of 11. I was obsessed with video games. My mom took me to her health club; and, one time at the gym was all it took; I was hooked. I am an introvert, so weight lifting is very enjoyable to me.
How did you start your career in sports?
I started at the age of 24 when I moved to LA. I originally moved to LA to pursue acting but the competition was fierce and everywhere I went, people asked me if I were a personal trainer to which I finally caved in. Personal training took off right away and I took as a sign that it would be a good career for me. Little that I knew, I was a natural at it.
Have you had any serious injuries?
I have done a lot of dumbs things in my life in sports and outside; I am very lucky that I don’t have any serious or life long injury.
What athletes of the past and present inspire you?
Arnold, Lou, Pete Sampra, Serge Nubret, Frank Zane.
How did you come up with the idea to develop your passion for sports into a successful professional career?
That happened over many years out of frustration. There was not any equipment that was good enough or adapted to what I taught, so I had to make it.
When you opened your first studio, did you already have such ambitious plans to open your own network of fitness halls around the world?
No, I was not planning on having my own studio. I got pushed into it. The place I was using eventually closed down and the other studios did not want my style of fitness, so I had no choice but to open my own studio.
What makes your hall stand out from many other establishments of this profile?
I am very curious, innovative, and intuitive which primes me for R&D.
I love to research and I love science. I am perhaps the most innovative person in fitness today.
What is your highlight?
I am definitely very unique and authentic. I don’t like to do what’s already out there and I never stay in one place too long, I keep evolving my ideas.
Granted that some of my ideas are really far out and in the future.
The Future is where I feel the most comfortable.
Who are your VIP clients?
Jennifer Aniston, Nicole Kidman, Courteney Cox, Courtney Love, Elizabeth Hurley, Sofia Vergara to name a few :)
Tell us about the process of creating the machines?
The process is ongoing and never ending. Every new improvement leads to a new design or concept, this is why we have so many new machines coming out. For me, this process is effortless, for most, it’s impossible.
How do you come up with this idea, how do you implement it?
I can only create while I teach this is why I still teach every week. There is no way for me to anticipate a need if I am not in a situation which exposes that need. Teaching is the only way for me to continue to create.
Most recently, you released a Microformer machine designed for home use – what is its special feature?
The Micro is ideal for home use; it’s portable, compact, easy to maneuver around
Who is the Lagree at Home app designed for?
The Lagree At home app is designed for everyone who wants to learn how to use our equipment.
How do you start playing sports and working out if you’ve been away from it all your life?
Baby steps, you ease back into a healthy lifestyle. You do a little here and there and you will develop the habit.
Once you have developed the habit of working out, you can easily expand from there.
Don’t you think that the attitude to sports in modern society is a little unbalanced: along with fitness freaks, there are absolutely inactive young people-why do people go to extremes?
That is so true, we have the extreme fitness fanatics and the extreme couch potatoes. I am not sure why this is like this. I believe that the majority of people have become lazy.
What is your film «The Future of Fitness» about?
The film is about the importance of moving for longevity and also for the brain. I think that in the future, exercise will become an increasingly important source of therapy for brain diseases and workouts will be developed to treat certain conditions of the brain
